Biden said the other nations of the G-7 would announce their vaccine pledges Friday.

Most of the G7 heads of state and government will reconvene on Monday in Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting, before Biden heads on to his first summit with President Vladimir Putin in Geneva, vowing to deliver a blunt appraisal of Russian behaviour.

It is the first in-person G-7 summit in almost two years.

Administration officials touted the plan as U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie, directed world leaders and their spouses across a raised platform along the picturesque shores of Carbis Bay for a series of kickoff photos.

"The G-7+ action plan that will be agreed to by leaders in Cornwall includes vaccinating the world's most vulnerable, providing emergency supplies, bolstering worldwide economic recovery, and positioning the global community to prepare for, prevent, detect and respond to future biological catastrophes", the White House said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also stressed the importance for multilateralism.

Building on Biden's pledge to order 500 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to distribute among poorer nations, Johnson plans to commit Britain to offering "at least" 100 million surplus doses within the next year.

"We've been calling to target the vulnerable around the world".

What can we expect from this year's G7 summit?

In total, the G7 leaders are expected to adopt a broader commitment of offering up to one billion doses, in order "to end the pandemic in 2022", according to Downing Street.

However, about 11 to 12 billion vaccine doses were necessary to immunize the entire global population, Halton warned, adding that so far only about 2.2 billion doses had been administered, about 77 per cent of which had gone to just 10 countries.

The G7 group remains divided over the issue of lifting patent protection for coronavirus vaccines, as proposed by the USA and several other nations.

Here's when it takes place, what the summit is for and what to expect.

The group is also looking to discuss plans to better prepare the world for future outbreaks.

In the evening, the leaders are scheduled to attend a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II and her son, Prince Charles, during which environmental protection and fighting climate change are on the agenda.

When is the G7 Summit?

It will be held in the coastal region of Carbis Bay in Cornwall in the UK. It will also be the first time these leaders will gather together since the pandemic started.

It is the first major global summit for Biden, which he is attending as part of a one-week Europe trip.

The club of leading economies - Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and United States - say a joint approach is the world's best chance for recovering from the global health crisis, and tackling climate change.

India, invited as a guest country along with South Africa, Australia and South Korea, will be participating virtually, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to address three breakout sessions over Saturday and Sunday.
