Vice President Kamala Harris, who was en route to Latin America on Sunday, safely returned to Joint Base Andrews after her plane had a "technical issue", according to Harris' chief spokesperson and senior adviser Symone Sanders.

US Vice President Kamala Harris was on her way to Guatemala for her first global trip.

"It is a technical issue". "We all said a little prayer but we're good".

Harris is taking her first trip overseas as President Joe Biden's deputy with an eye towards tackling the root causes of migration from the region - one of the thorniest issues facing the White House.

"I'm good, I'm good", Harris told the reporters after emerging from Air Force Two and giving a double thumbs up. She is due to fly to Guatemala on Sunday and fly to Mexico on June 8 where she will spend the day.

Harris has since come under criticism for not having visited the border.

In response to that criticism, Harris and her office have claimed that her focus was always on the "root causes" of the migration, not on conditions in USA border towns.
