India Covid Deaths Soar Toll Past 250,000

According to the health ministry data, Karnataka had reported 27,442 fresh Covid-19 cases on April 27, which increased to 46,769 on May 11.

The other states and union territories where Covid-19 cases have escalated in the last 18 days include Odisha, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Mumbai on Monday recorded a steep drop in new COVID-19 cases at 1,794, the lowest single-day count in almost two months.

Thirteen states - Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh cumulatively account for 82.68 per cent of India's total active cases, the ministry said. "We seem to be plateauing around 400,000 cases a day".

India's cumulative recoveries have surged to 1,90,27,304 with 3,56,082 recoveries being registered in a span of 24 hours.

The National Mortality Rate now stands at 1.09 per cent, it said.

This comes a day after World Health Organisation (WHO) Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan termed the rate of infections and deaths in India as "worrying" and called on governments to boost exercises on reporting actual numbers.

Karnataka saw the maximum casualties (596) followed by Maharashtra (549), it said.

Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain confirmed today that while the second wave of Covid is still very much on, the national capital is past the peak and the number of cases and the positivity rate are both on their way down.

A total of 17,27,10,066 vaccine doses have been administered through 25,15,519 sessions, according to the provisional report till 7 am.

Besides, 5,55,10,630 and 71,95,632 beneficiaries aged 45 to 60 have been administered the first and second dose respectively while, 5,38,06,205 and 1,56,60,702 people aged above 60 have taken the first and second dose.

The Union Health Ministry Tuesday appreciated Covid-19 containment models of Mumbai and Pune, saying that such models need to be replicated at the national level to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Districts showing continued increase in cases since last two weeks are Bengaluru Urban and Muysuru in Karnataka; Chennai, Chengalpattu and Thiruvallur in Tamil Nadu; Ernakulam and Malappuram in Kerala; 24 Paraganas North and Kolkata in West Bengal; Jaipur in Rajasthan; Dehradun in Uttarakhand; East Godavari and Visakhapatanam in Andhra Pradesh; Satara in Maharashtra; and Khordha in Odisha. Smith also said that the efficacy of AstraZeneca's vaccine, manufactured at a production facility in Baltimore, is not clear and the US Food and Drug Administration has not yet certified those doses.

The governments of Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Tuesday joined several other states which have made a decision to issue global tenders for procurement of COVID vaccines as the domestic supply fails to keep up with the rising demand amid the fierce second wave of the pandemic.
