They reportedly pointed a gun at the child while demanding to know where cash and valuables were kept.

She was tied up and strangled, while her 32-year-old husband, a civil aviation pilot, was also bound and gagged.

"Tell us where the money is, we will kill the baby", one of the burglars said to Ms Crouch, her husband told police.

The thieves also killed the family's dog and left it hanging on the fence of the house in the suburb of Glyka Nera, the police added.

Caroline Crouch was strangled in front of her baby.

The minister responsible for public order, Michalis Chrisochoidis, described the killing as "particularly heinous", and the government announced a 300,000-euro (£260,000) reward.

The Athenian-Macedonian News Agency reports the robbers stole about $23,000 in cash and nearly $40,000 worth of jewellery.

"We've seen several other ugly murders throughout the years".

Mr Anagnostopoulos eventually managed to free himself and found his baby daughter crying beside the lifeless body of his wife.

Charalambos Anagnostopoulos and Caroline Crouch were targeted in a violent home invasion.
