Sicknick's death, attributed to pro-Trump rioters, was a leading excuse for a federal law enforcement crackdown on every protester physically at the Capitol that day, regardless of whether they committed violence.

Washington DC's Chief Medical Examiner confirmed on Monday that Capitol Hill police officer Brian Sicknick suffered two strikes and died of natural causes, Washington Post reports. "The District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Francisco J. Diaz, MD, FACP, issued determinations on April 7 as to the cause and manner of death for four of those individuals and today issues the cause and manner of death of the remaining individual".

Two rioters are charged with attacking Sicknick with a chemical irritant. They each faced an array of charges, including assaulting a federal officer with a risky weapon and conspiracy, although authorities stopped short of charging them with his death. Diaz also said there was no evidence of internal or external injuries.

Conflicting reports emerged of the circumstances of Sicknick's death.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), paid tribute to Sicknick on the Senate floor on January 19th, saying the officer understood "that wearing that uniform, wearing that badge, that you had a sacred duty to protect this sacred space". Police said that Sicknick collapsed after he returned to his office in the wake of the riot. They spilled his blood, they took our son away from his parents. The case is being investigated by D.C. police, who handle all deaths in the District, along with the Capitol Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He died around 9:30 p.m. on January 7, the report said. "The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department will jointly investigate the case and the Department of Justice will spare no resources in investigating and holding accountable those responsible".

But the determination of a natural cause of death means the medical examiner found that a medical condition alone caused his death - it was not brought on by an injury.
