South Wales Police responding to ‘serious’ incident

The public has been urged by police to "refrain from speculation" about the incident.

South Wales Police says Wenjing Xu's death is now being treated as a murder and an investigation is being led the force's Major Crime Investigation Team.

In a statement, South Wales Police said: "Police units are now dealing with a serious incident which occurred in Baglan Street, Treorchy, at approximately midday today".

A teenager that died following a "serious incident" in Treorchy on Friday has been named as Wenjing Xu, police have confirmed.

"We will release further information when appropriate to do - your support is appreciated", the police added.

SWP are also seeking witnesses but the nature of the incident has not been disclosed.

A 31-year-old man, known to the victim, is in police custody having been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Chris Bryant, Labour MP for Rhondda, tweeted that he is aware of "disturbing events on Baglan Street" and said his thoughts go out to all those affected.

A local onlooker posted on Twitter describing "ambulances, cop cars, first responders and an air ambulance" on the scene.

Paramedics were called at 12:00 GMT "to an incident at an address in the Ynyswen area of Treorchy", the Welsh Ambulance Service said.

Users on social media were trying to serach for answers of what could have happened at the scene as police still did not give any further details into the incident.
