Wayne Gretzky's former team, the Edmonton Oilers, today announced they would pay tribute to the life of Walter by wearing a commemorative helmet decal in his memory.

The elder Gretzky, who died Thursday night at age 82, was the father of Paulina's dad, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, and was widely considered Canada's hockey dad.

The famous hockey father has been credited by Wayne for inspiring his love for the sport by spending many years playing and coaching hockey with his family.

Gretzky is predeceased by his wife Phyllis, whom he married in 1960. They had five children.

Gretzky died at 82 after battling Parkinson's Disease.

Wayne Gretzky is hugged by his father, Walter, after being presented with a vehicle during the pre-game ceremonies for Gretzky's last game in the National Hockey League, as a New York Ranger, on April 18, 1999.

"It was a Sunday, early afternoon and there was a auto in the laneway so we knocked on the door and there you go you're at the shrine of hockey and you just think of all of the memories that are there in the basement at Walter Gretzky's home".

"Wayne was who he was because of Wally", said Messier.

"I think it's something to be emulated, the way he nurtured Wayne".

"If Wayne is going to be happy there and he enjoys it, then certainly I won't regret it", his father said at the time.

A small memorial sprung up for Walter Gretzky outside the arena that bears his son's name in Brantford on Friday.

They are among the many tributes being made to Gretzky since news of his death has spread.
