President Donald Trump, a repeated absentee voter, broke with tradition on Saturday by appearing at library in Florida's Palm Beach County to cast his ballot in person, a move that comes after repeatedly condemning mail-in voting.

While many have states rushed to expand voting by mail this spring due to the pandemic, Democrats have started encouraging voters to cast ballots early and in person, if possible, as the prospect of delayed tabulations and postal service slowdowns loom.

More than 50 million people have already voted in the election either by mail or in person, according to the U.S. Elections Project, a turnout-tracking database run by University of Florida political scientist Michael McDonald. "Much more secure than when you send in a ballot, I can tell you that".

Mr Trump has accused Mr Biden of overstating the health crisis to scare Americans into voting for him.

Opinion polls show Biden leading Trump nationally, but the race is much closer in the crucial battleground states that will decide the election.

After voting, President Trump boasted that he was headed to big rallies which - even as he slides in national polls - he said have recently welcomed large crowds, the Associated Press reported. A Reuters/Ipsos survey released earlier this week showed Biden with a four-percentage point advantage over Mr Trump in the state, down from seven points the week before.

Mr Obama, still popular in the party almost four years after leaving office, delivered a blistering attack on Mr Trump's leadership when he made his 2020 campaign-trail debut in Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

Biden will get some help again on Saturday from Obama, who will hold a drive-in rally in Miami.
