Flexen, 24, will fill in for ace Jacob deGrom, who has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 16) with elbow soreness and is now headed back to NY for an MRI.

"We're not sure exactly what it is, so we want to get it checked out", Callaway said. DeGrom will head to NY to have an MRI Saturday on his elbow according to manager Mickey Callaway.

Following Friday's 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Mickey Callaway announced that the Mets will promote Chris Flexen to start on Saturday afternoon.

"So we're being overly cautious at this point".

DeGrom was dominant while pitching 13 scoreless innings and striking out 24 in his first two outings, extending his streak to a record-tying 26 straight quality starts.

The hurler already had Tommy John surgery to replace his torn ulnar collateral ligament in 2010. The Minnesota Twins hit three home runs off him while scoring six runs in four innings, while the Atlanta Braves tallied three runs in five innings with two home runs of their own against the Mets' ace. DeGrom also dealt with sickness over the last week, making him unable to conduct his normal routine between starts.

DeGrom and the Mets reached an agreement on a new five-year, $137.5 million contract before the season's start.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said deGrom had been recently slowed by strep throat. "His arm felt significantly better following treatment with our health and performance staff today", he said. Callaway did confirm that Noah Syndergaard will pitch as scheduled on Sunday with Steven Matz taking his regularly scheduled turn Monday against Philadelphia.
