The Potters are now searching for a new manager after the departure of Paul Lambert last week following their relegation from the Premier League.

Derby County have confirmed that manager Gary Rowett has asked for permission to hold talks with Stoke City over their vacant manager's seat.

Stoke City will reportedly announce the appointment of Gary Rowett as the club's new manager on Tuesday.

Rowett is expected to swap Pride Park for the Bet365 Stadium four months after rejecting the chance to join the club and agreeing a new three-and-a-half-year contract with Derby.

Rowett will still be gutted at missing out on the play-off final, but make no mistake about it he'll be gunning to bounce back next season as he attempts to become the first Rams gaffer since Billy Davies (2007) to win Premier League promotion.

"The club is now in discussion with Stoke and will update our supporters in due course".

Stoke would have to pay sizeable compensation for Rowett, who started his managerial career with Burton Albion, and it remains to be seen how hard Derby would try to keep him.

Stoke's 10-year stay in the top flight was ended with defeat by Crystal Palace in their penultimate match of the season, with Lambert unable to save them from the drop after succeeding Mark Hughes in January.

"But having played for Derby and lived in the area, my aim has always been to do it with this club".
